Sarah Palin: conservatives find
the girl of their dreams

The Alaskan governor’s family life and political views press the right’s buttons

...History was on the march again the morning after Barack Obama became the first African-American to accept his party’s White House nomination. After the fireworks, the 80,000-strong crowd who had cheered Obama to the skies at the Mile High stadium in Denver woke up with a hangover.

“We may be seeing the first woman president. As a Democrat, I am reeling,” said Camille Paglia, the cultural critic. “That was the best political speech I have ever seen delivered by an American woman politician. Palin is as tough as nails.”

‘Suburban mom’ who took
on her own party

...The meteoric rise of Alaska’s first female governor, a mother of five who is a conservative Christian, soared to even greater heights on Friday after John McCain, Republican presidential candidate, chose Ms Palin as his running mate.

In some ways, the choice reflects Mr McCain’s own narrative of being an outsider within his own party, a politician who chooses country first with “grit, integrity, and good sense”.

Lefty Bloggers Go After
Palin's Daughter

Members of the lefty blogosphere haven't stopped perpetuating the rumor Sarah Palin "faked" her last pregnancy and are now humiliating her daughter Bristol on the blatantly incorrect suspicion she is the real mother of baby Trig.

...Not only is the DailyKos disgustingly inspecting Bristol's midriff with all the fervor of LA paparazzi examining J-Lo's or Jennifer Aniston's washboard stomachs for evidence of a "bump," the DailyKos is wrong on when the photo was taken. It was taken, and published, by the Anchorage Daily News in 2006. Baby Trig, a child with Down's Syndrome, was born on April 18, 2008. That's a long time for a teen girl to be carrying a "bump" which looks nothing more than the curve of a tight sweater.

Yeah, About that 'Experience' thing...

by Kevin McCullough

Only a fool would question Sarah Palin's experience as a basis for her readiness to be Vice-President, especially as compared to Barack Obama's experience as a basis for his readiness to be President.

Never has such a scurrilous set of accusations been less founded. Those who argue them, such as the Obama campaign, because they know the truth to be irrefutable end up rendering themselves silly. The truth is that Sarah Palin is more qualified to be President than Biden or Obama. But let's examine the facts for what they tell us.

American Issues Project Launches Ad

Obama Played by Chicago Rules

By DAVID FREDDOSO

Democrats don't like it when you say that Barack Obama won his first election in 1996 by throwing all of his opponents off the ballot on technicalities.

By clearing out the incumbent and the others in his first Democratic primary for state Senate, Mr. Obama did something that was neither illegal nor even uncommon. But Mr. Obama claims to represent something different from old-style politics -- especially old-style Chicago politics. And the senator is embarrassed enough by what he did that he misrepresents it in the prologue of his political memoir, "The Audacity of Hope."

Obama Needs to Explain His
Ties to William Ayers

Michael Barone

...For Obama, the outsider who gained the trust of the insiders, the position is different. He was willing to use Ayers and ally with him despite his terrorist past and lack of repentance. An unrepentant terrorist, who bragged of bombing the U.S. Capitol and the Pentagon, was a fit associate. Ayers evidently helped Obama gain insider status in Chicago civic life and politics--how much, we can't be sure. But most American politicians would not have chosen to associate with a man with Ayers's past or of Ayers's beliefs. It's something voters might reasonably want to take into account.

Biden, Obama share liberal leanings

WASHINGTON - Sens. Joe Biden and Barack Obama are left of center on many issues but still differ on a number of proposals.

Both enjoy high ratings from unions and some liberal groups. Biden, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is rated more conservative than Obama on foreign policy issues.

Here's a look at where the two have differed on key votes and how they're rated by various interest groups.

“If the Democrats think we're going to be able to nominate someone who can win without that person being able to table unimpeachable credentials on national security and foreign policy, I think we're making a tragic mistake.”

On racial stereotypes: "In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian-Americans moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking."

On Barack Obama and racial stereotypes : "...the first mainstream African American [presidential candidate] who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."

On himself: "I think I have a much higher IQ than you do."

Rise in Tax, Drop in Cigarette Sales May Squeeze Md.'s Expected Revenue

Cigarette sales have dropped by nearly 25 percent in Maryland since the state's tobacco tax doubled in January, as sticker shock apparently has curtailed some residents' smoking and sent others across the border for better deals.

...Although the higher tax rate has increased tobacco tax collections significantly, the larger-than-expected decline in sales means the state could be short of its budgeted revenue by $40 million to $60 million this year if current trends continue. The state had been projecting about $440 million in revenue from the tobacco tax this year.

Wind turbines across Oregon stir up health scare

Study suggests living close to an energy farm can cause a variety of physical ailments

..."I started to cry," Eaton, 57, recalled of her first sight of the Willow Creek Wind Project in late July. "They're going to be hanging over the back of our house, and now there's the medical thing."

"The medical thing" is new research suggesting that living close to wind turbines, as Eaton and her 60-year-old husband, Mike, soon will be doing, can cause sleep disorders, difficulty with equilibrium, headaches, childhood "night terrors" and other health problems.

"You cannot legislate new energy technologies into existence. If the market cannot find a replacement for gasoline at four dollars a gallon, the replacement doesn't exist, and there's nothing anybody in Congress, Gang of Ten, gang of 100, can do about it."

A GOP divide over energy: Gingrey rejects bipartisan energy proposal pushed by Chambliss, Isakson

U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, operating in high re-election gear, has suddenly been forced to defend his “Gang of Ten” energy proposal — not from Democratic attacks, but from slashes by fellow Republicans.

On Saturday, U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey declared that Georgia’s two senators — Johnny Isakson is also part of the bipartisan effort — are on the wrong track. Other House Republicans from Georgia are likely to follow Gingrey’s lead.

Reaction started on Friday, when conservative radio godfather Rush Limbaugh declared the “Gang of Ten” energy package to be “bipartisan garbage.”

American Energy Yes, Taxes No

Newt Gingrich

But even as some members of the House stand heroically for energy price relief, for reasons beyond my understanding, a group of Republicans in the Senate has signed on to an $85 billion tax increase disguised as an energy bill.

Last week a "Gang of 10" from the Senate - including Republican Senators Lindsey Graham, John Thune, Saxby Chambliss, Bob Corker and Johnny Isakson - announced a "sweeping" energy bill that raises taxes but does little to develop more American energy.

The fact is, if we aggressively pursue new sources of energy, we do not need a tax increase of any kind.

A not-so-public man: the private character
of John McCain

It's pretty amazing when you think about it. War hero John McCain has been in the public eye almost his entire adult life. He's run numerous campaigns, served in Congress for 25 years, and is in his second run for the presidency.

Yet, there is so much of his life that reveals an absolutely sterling character, but remains largely unknown to the public. And in spite of the tremendous political advantages that publicity could confer, McCain instinctively keeps that information private. Although as a presidential candidate he may be forced to overcome this reticence, he honorably shies away from using his personal heroics for political gain.
